Medium-size to large tree with broad pyramidal crown. Usually grows to 8 - 12 m but can reach 15 m in the right circumstances. The originally Asian species is resistant to Dutch elm disease, which makes Ulmus pumila a good hybrid parent. The tree is also very drought-tolerant and tolerates a strongly alkaline soil. Originally from a continental climate and despite its hardiness, it often has some difficulty with the unsettled winters of North-West Europe’s maritime climate. In the first half of the 20th century, it was used on a large scale in the USA to combat wind erosion.
