Ulmus minor 'Sarniensis' (syn. U. campestris 'Monumentalis', U. c. 'Wheatleyi') is a large tree with a dead straight trunk and a regular narrow pyramidal manner of growth. It attains a height of approx. 20 m. The crown is formed by sturdy short-spreading branches. The rough flakey bark, particularly in older specimens, is a characteristic feature. The relatively small leaves are broad ovoid and dark green. They come out late in the spring and turn yellow in the autumn. They stay on the tree for a long time. 'Sarniensis' is sensitive to Dutch elm disease. Winter hardiness zone: 5a
