Narrow, vertical and densely branched tree that becomes conical later with branching down to the ground. Height up to 20 m, width approx. 4 - 5 m. When the lower branches touch the ground, new trees can develop there. Accordingly, one tree can ultimately develop into a little wooded stand. The reddish brown trunk peels off in small strips. The branches grow slanted upwards to horizontal and the young twigs are dark green, turning reddish brown later. The flattened twigs have many branches, with scales stacked like roof shingles. They are shiny green and somewhat white underneath. When rubbed they give off a strong smell. The flowers and small cones are relatively unremarkable. It tolerates pruning well. Some cultivars have accordingly become popular hedge plants. The tree supplies a prime type of timber.

The right time to plant Thuja plicata is during the dormancy period. In Western Europe, Thuja plicata with root balls can generally be planted from mid-November to late April, although this depends strongly on the climatic conditions and the species of tree.
