In its natural habitat in the northeast of North America this species grows to become a small to medium-sized tree. It is a slow grower with a light-grey trunk and glossy reddish-brown twigs. This gives the tree a remarkable appearance in the winter. The imparipinnate leaves consist of 13 - 17 lanceolate leaflets that turn golden yellow in the autumn. The leaf edge is usually sharply serrated. The flowers are in umbels with a diameter of approx. 16 cm. The separate flowers are 0.5 – 0.7 cm in size and white. Orange-red berries follow in the autumn. S. americana closely resembles S. aucuparia but is distinguished by the reddish-brown twigs and the somewhat narrower dark green leaves.

The right time to plant Sorbus americana is during the dormancy period. In Western Europe, Sorbus americana with root balls can generally be planted from mid-November to late April, although this depends strongly on the climatic conditions and the species of tree.
