A cultivar of Q. velutina, resembling Q. rubra. Grows to be a tall tree with a good ascending trunk and a dark grey smooth bark. The bark is a remarkable orange-yellow. Young twigs are olive-green to brown, later reddish-brown and covered with felt-like hairs. The buds, up to 12 mm in size and covered with grey hairs, are remarkable. The leaves are obovate with a few lobes and with practically smooth edges. Young leaves are grey and felt-like, older leaves dark green and bare, light green on the underside with hairs on the veins. Compared to 'Albertsii' the leaves remain substantially smaller. They grow to 17 - 25 cm long and 12 - 20 cm wide. The ovoid acorns are single or in pairs and are half enclosed by the cupule: the latter is covered with thin contiguous scales.
