Red-leaved cultivar of Q. robur with branches ascending at an angle. The crown is round, the height approx. 15 m. The trunk usually branches out low down and the bark is dark grey, with grooves in old specimens. Young twigs are reddish-brown. The variable leaves are obovate to elongated oval, 5 - 14 cm long and 4 - 8 cm wide. They have 3 to 6 pairs of blunt lobes and emerge a remarkable deep purplish-brownish-red in the spring. Later they turn dark purplish-green. The second foliage (that emerges after 21 June) is also a remarkable brownish-red. The ovoid acorns are grouped in twos to sixes and are a maximum of one-third enclosed in the cupule: the latter is covered with small, triangular, contiguous scales. 'Purpurascens' is suitable as a solitary in parks.
