Large tree with a broad ovoid crown growing up to 15 m tall by 10 m wide. The young twigs are olive green, sometimes with a slightly red hue. The old bark is grey-brown and has longitudinal grooves. The broad elliptical to oval leaves are deeply pinnately lobed and the lobes are dissected more than halfway into the leaf blade. The lobes are pointed and sharply serrated. In spring when the leaf emerges it has a slightly reddish colour. In summer it is glossy dark green, turning dark red to deep brown-red in autumn. A healthy park tree that has few demands as to soil, provide it is limy enough. The tree was selected due to its excellent bright red to orange autumn colours and named after Robert and Jelena de Belder’s estate, Hemelrijk (Arboretum Kalmthout).
