Originates from Berlin Zoo from where it was taken to Enniger, Westphalia. Forms a straight trunk that often forks. When young it has a narrow crown but this becomes broader and rounder at a later stage. The triangular to ovoid leaves are glossy dark green and have a grey underside. The leaf edge is lobed or roughly serrated. 'Enniger' bears flowers in the form of male catkins. Little sensitive to rust but sensitive to canker. Grows in all types of soil. The tree is suitable for landscapes and coastal areas but also as a solitary in public gardens and parks. Very resistant to wind. Winter hardiness zone: 5a
