Origin
Meestal een van de grond af vertakte struik die uitgroeit tot een middelgrote boom met een spreidende grillige takstand. Soms ook als stamboom gekweekt. De stam is lichtgrijs met paarsbruine vlekken en heeft afbladderende schorsplaten. Vooral bij oudere bomen is dit bijzonder decoratief. Jonge twijgen zijn voorzien van opvallende lenticellen. Het glanzende blad loopt donker uit en is veelal scheef van vorm en de bovenste helft van de bladrand is onregelmatig gegolfd. Als belangrijkste sierwaarde geldt de herfstverkleuring in rood, geel en purpertinten. Het zijn vooral oudere exemplaren die bloeien. De bloemen zijn circa 2 cm groot en vallen op door de felrode helmknoppen. In volle bloei is de nog kale struik een bijzondere verschijning. Na de bloei volgen circa 1 cm grote gehoornde bruine vruchten. Oppervlakkig en fijn wortelgestel.
