Grows from a shrub into a small or medium-size tree with a very densely branching, narrow pyramidal, later broader crown. The leaves are dark olive green and smooth-edged, or with few small spikes on the upper half of the lamina. The flowers are small and inconspicuous. In principle the flowers are female, but in practice they are self-pollinating. The flowers are followed by numerous glossy red berries from 8 to 10 mm across. Prefers a humic, moist but well-drained soil and tolerates either acidic or calcareous soil. Also an excellent hedge plant.
