The crown is spherical and very open, which is why it has never become popular. The bark is grey brown. The compound, dark-green leaf is odd-pinnate, 15 - 20 cm large and has 9 - 11 leaflets that are slightly smaller than of the F. excelsior. It has no flowers or fruits. 'Nana' is applied as a decorative shrub in (small) gardens, little squares and narrow streets with wide green verges. It prefers moist, nutritive soil. Winter hardiness zone: 4
