A small tree with a broad flattened crown. Height and breadth eventually approx. 7 m. The widely-spreading branches are covered with slightly curved thorns, size approx. 4 - 5 cm. The trunk and branches are greyish-brown. The leaves are glossy dark green, have a sharply serrated edge and turn flaming orange to red in the autumn. C. persimilis produces an abundance of white flowers in felt-like umbels that are followed by abundant fruit in the autumn. The fruits are approx. 1 cm in diameter and they remain on the tree for a long time. They all fall at the same time, which can be inconvenient in paved areas. The root system consists of a few deeply penetrating roots with few hair roots. Shows good resistance to frost and dry conditions. Its low branches make it less suitable for streets.
