Grows from a shrub into a multi-stemmed tree up to about 8 m, with a broad, vase-shaped crown. The leaf is dark green on top and blue-green on the underside, with a slightly undulate leaf margin. The autumn colour is deep purplish red. Each flower head is surrounded by four slightly overlapping bracts. These are light pink in warm weather and/or dry soil to pinkish red in cool weather and moist soil. The fruits characteristic of C. kousa are hardly produced. The plant is shallow rooting with a fibrous root system and requires humic soil, which is not too dry.
