Grows from a shrub into a small, multi-stemmed tree with a broad, somewhat irregular, round crown. Young leaves have a pinkish red hue; mature leaves dark green with broad yellow margins. The leaf is not very susceptible to sunburn. Autumn colours vary from pinkish red margins to completely deep purplish red. Each flower head is surrounded by four deep pinkish red bracts. Gives off many flower buds, but these are fairly susceptible to frost, so many flowers do not open after a cold winter. The plant is shallow rooting with a fibrous root system and requires humic soil, which is not too dry.
