Origin
Een vrij langzaam groeiende en dicht vertakkende boom die in het jeugdstadium kegelvormig is maar later breed eirond tot rond uitgroeit. Volwassen bomen worden circa 10 m breed en 15 - 20 m hoog. De takken gaan bij het ouder worden doorhangen. Jonge twijgen zijn bruingrijs, oudere takken en de stam zijn donkergrijs en opvallend glad. Het blad is frisgroen in het voorjaar. De bladrand is scherp dubbel gezaagd en de bladtop is toegespitst. In de herfst kleurt het blad goudgeel. Indien haagbeuk jaarlijks gesnoeid wordt blijft het verdroogde, bruine blad in de regel tot diep in de winter aan de plant hangen. De kleine nootjes bevinden zich in decoratieve losse vruchtkatjes. De wortelgroei is tamelijk oppervlakkig. Verteerd blad is een goede bodemverbetering. Haagbeuken kunnen zonder problemen 200 jaar worden. Wanneer Carpinus betulus de ruimte heeft, vormt zich op oudere leeftijd een brede kroon met een hoogte tot twintig meter.
