This Chinese variety of the Cappadocian Maple forms a round crown. It is particularly decorative in spring. When the young shoots appear, the leaves have a striking purple colour. Although most leaves have five lobes, the two outer lobes are usually very small, so that only the three larger lobes stand out. The variety name ‘tricaudatum’ (‘with three points’) makes reference to this. Like the rest of the species, this variety does not tolerate paved surfaces, which limits its use to solitary trees in parks and large gardens.
