Trees symbolize reliability, growth and sustainability. Planting a tree is an act that shows confidence in the future, but also historical awareness. On this page we present a trees with a very exceptional story.
From 12 June 1942 to 1 August 1944, Anne Frank, the now world famous Jewish girl, her parents and her sister were in hiding in the Secret Annex of a building on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam. For millions around the world, her fate - to die in a Nazi concentration camp - symbolises the suffering of innocent people during wartime. At the same time, Anne stands for the optimism of youth and the hope of a peaceful and harmonious future; something which is borne out by the global success of her diary.
White horse chestnut
In her diary, Anne writes a few times about the tree on which she looked out from the window of her room. Amid all the threat and danger the common chestnut tree is a lovely, soothing element in Anne Frank’s account. It was her only contact with nature and the rolling of the seasons.
ElemenTree and Wereldboom foundations
During a storm in 2010, this horse chestnut tree was felled by heavy gusts of wind. The tree had been sick for years and attempts to conserve it proved to be in vain. Fortunately, propagation material was collected and we are delighted that, together with the ElemenTree and Wereldboom foundations, we are able to supply offspring of the original Anne Frank tree.
A certificate of authenticity is provided with the trees guaranteeing their provenance and with every tree purchased the work of these two foundations is supported. These organisations are committed to the conservation of trees in urban areas and undertake to put young children in touch with nature.
